There seems to be high interest at SUSE in this package.
A few minutes earlier, https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/1190476 came in (which is the latest version of a series of opened/superseded submit request), which also adds a subpackage of initrd, including various installation steps.
As you seem to have experience with that package, can you have a look at it?
The changelog entries in your request look better, so if there were a function to merge submit requests, this could be a perfect usage example :)

Sorry for the multiple superseded submit requests, but upstream created 3 subreleases in a very short time span (see https://github.com/systemd/mkosi/releases), the first one fixing a build error I reported in OBS. I can definitely split the changelog in my request to clarify what is included in each one.
If this request goes forward instead of 1190476, we would like to enable the mkosi-initrd package and add some distro-specific conf for it, so the size of the generated initrds are reduced from ~100M to ~40M. Please see https://en.opensuse.org/Mkosi-initrd
