Overview
instead of deleting carla, we could just as well disable linuxsampler in there - suggested in sr#580915
which has the side-effect that lmms no longer depends on linuxsampler neither
sorry for not taking part in this discussion until now, I'm just too busy in my daytime job... but it should get easier during the next days.
I'm wondering, when I asked for inclusion of linuxsampler to factory a year ago, didn't we go through all this legal discussion with Dominique and the legal team?
Anyway, I don't recall all the details but basically the whole thing started when a user asked me for enabling building carla as an internal plugin in lmms. Which in turn led to include linuxsampler support in carla.
Also at that time the linuxsampler license issue got discussed again in their mailing list, but I don't remember now what the outcome was. I seem to remember that other OSS distributions found ways to accept the exception, but I can't spend the time right now to look it up and refresh my memory.
Cheers
So is carla and lmms usable without linuxsampler?
Sure they are usable, just "crippled" in the sense that some cool new features the upstream authors implemented, aren't available in our version.
My initial idea was to keep linuxsampler in packman, and bcond it in carla and lmms, IIRC that was what I was trying to set up a year ago, but somehow we ended up ditching it in packman and putting everything into multimedia:*, probably because it seemed the legal worries were sorted out... Dominiquewas pretty much involved in this, so he should remember as well.
