It uses FreeS/WAN or openswan connections from ipsec.conf. These can be monitored, and be rebuild upon failure. For monitoring, a host on the other side of the tunnel can be pinged. Optionally, routing settings can be tweaked, a pre-authentication using opie can be performed or another machine can be remote controlled.
