=========================================================== "FPL Neu" font pack for LaTeX Version 0.9 as of 2005-07-22 ============================================================ Ralf Stubner ralf.stubner at physik.uni-erlangen.de Walter Schmidt w.a.schmidt at gmx.net This collection comprises the "FPL Neu" PostScript Type1 fonts and the support files required to use them with LaTeX on the Un*x or PC platform. The four fonts /FontName filemane -------------------------------- FPLNeu-Roman fp9r8a.pfb FPLNeu-Italic fp9ri8a.pfb FPLNeu-Bold fp9b8a.pfb FPLNeu-BoldItalic fp9bi8a.pfb constitute a comprehensive re-implementation of the Palatino typeface family, provding the full T1 character set and a subset of TS1. Each font includes both lining and oldstyle digits, and the Roman cut comprises also real smallcaps. The fonts are based on URW Palladio L and on Diego Puga's Pazo math fonts. Additional and enhanced glyphs were designed by Ralf Stubner. Notice that installing this distribution does _not_ break PSNFSS, i.e., the existing support files for using Adobe Palatino (or URW Palladio, respectively). FPL Neu is a font family of its own, which can be installed and used beside Palatino/Palladio. ChangeLog --------- 2005-07-22 Basically changed glyph names, to comply with the "Adobe Glyph List For New Fonts", and to support the text tools of the Adobe Reader as far as possible. Improved at-sign and paragraph sign, following the advice of H. Zapf; previous paragraph sign is still available as paragraph.alt1 (mapped to \textpilcrow). Improved shape of upright mu. Various new glyphs (partially not yet usable from within LaTeX, however): pi, uni301A, uni301B, Eng, eng, kgreenlandic, longs, Oogonek, oogonek, f_k, f_j Various kerning pairs added or improved. (Only in the TeX metrics; not yet in the AFMs.) 2005-02-09 The new font family name "FPL Neu" is now reflected in the fonts. Map files fp9.map[ali] addapted accordingly. New kerning pair emdash-e for the regular font. (So far, only in the TFM.) 2005-02-07 The font family has been renamed from "FPL" to "FPL Neu", with the fontname code being "p9" (fplneu) now. As a result, all file names and directory names have changed. Names of encoding files changed from "urw2*.enc" to "agl*.enc."; internal names of the encoding vectors changed accordingly. Slightly fixed kerning values after overhanging letters. Matching kerning data in the TFM, AFM and PFM files. PFM files should be usable. New glyphs circle, Pcircle, dblverticalbar. Glyphs copyright and registered are now based on the letters C and R of the FPL typeface, rather than on neutral shapes. Glyph .notdef removed. The width of ordmasculine in the Bold font now matches the other fonts; this results in small changes to the glyph numero, too. Slightly changed bounding boxes of [Tt]cedilla in the Bold font. Fixed centigrade in FPL Roman 2005-01-18 First public release Installation paths ------------------ The files of your TeX system are arranged in one or more tree structures, the so-called "texmf trees". The names and paths of the particular root directories of these trees vary between different TeX systems. In the following instructions the install paths are indicated in a form such as, for instance: <texmf>/fonts/type1/... <texmf> stands for the the actual name of the root directory of the texmf tree, where you want to install the files: teTeX and MikTeX require additional files to be installed in a particular "local" tree (rather than in the one where the default components of the TeX system reside). Its path must either be indicated in the documentation of the TeX system or you should have defined it yourself upon installation. With MikTeX, for instance, the root directory of the "local" texmf tree is usually "c:\localtexmf", so you would in fact have to substitute c:\localtexmf\fonts\type1\... for the path name in the above example. VTeX/Free, in contrast, has only one single texmf tree, whose root directory is normally "/usr/local/vtex/texmf" (on Linux) or "c:\texmf" (on OS/2). Note that paths are indicated in "Unix notation" (i.e., using slashes as directory separators), unless they are specific for Win or OS/2. If you have installed the very first release -------------------------------------------- ...as of 2005-01-18, you MUST delete it entirely, before installing the present one. Rationale: File and directory names have changed. Delete the following directories including their contents: <texmf>/fonts/type1/public/fpl <texmf>/fonts/afm/public/fpl <texmf>/fonts/tfm/public/fpl <texmf>/tex/latex/fpl <texmf>/doc/fonts/fpl <texmf>/fonts/map/dvips/fpl <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips/fpl Remove also the following files: <texmf>/dvips/config/fpl.map <texmf>/font/map/vtex/fpl.map and any copies of the files urw2*.enc, which you have possibly created in other directories. Finally, remove the record for the font mapping file fpl.[map|ali] from the configuration of your TeX system. Installing ---------- Unpack the ZIP archives fp9-fonts.zip and fp9.zip in the directory <texmf> of your TeX system. On teTeX < 3.x, create a new directory <texmf>/dvips/fp9 and move all files, that were installed in the directory <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips/fp9, to the new directory: cd <texmf> mkdir dvips/fp9 mv fonts/enc/dvips/fp9/* dvips/fp9 On VTeX/Free, move all files from <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips/fp9 to <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips: cd <texmf> mv fonts/enc/dvips/fp9/* fonts/enc/dvips Rationale: teTeX < 3.x and VTeX/Free do not yet comply with the latest TDS specifications, as far as the location of encoding files is concerned. Updating the filename database ------------------------------ Many TeX systems require manual updating of a "filename database" after adding of new files. Please, consult the documentation of your TeX system! Configuring your TeX system --------------------------- The present distribution includes several font map files for the FPL Neu fonts. You need to configure your TeX system so that an appropriate file will be used in fact. The required steps depend on the particular TeX system. Particular sets of instructions are provided below for the following systems: * teTeX 2.0 and later * MikTeX 2.4 and later * VTeX/Free 8 and later * Configuring teTeX: Use the shell script "updmap" to add the font map file named "fp9.map" to the configuration. See the documentation of your particular teTeX version how to use the script. With teTeX 2.0 and above, execute the following commands: texhash updmap --enable Map fp9.map (Note that the font map file has changed, as compared with the the 2005-02-07 release. Thus, you must -- at least -- execute "updmap" once again, when updating.) * Configuring MikTeX 2.4+ Edit the file <texmf>\miktex\config\updmap.cfg. (In case it does not yet exist, create it as a new file.) Add the line Map fp9.map and save the file; then execute the following commands in a command line window ("DOS shell"): initexmf -u updmap * Configuring VTeX/Free: Make VTeX read the additional font map ("aliasing") file fp9.ali. This is usually accomplished by putting a record for this file into each of the configuration files <texmf>/vtex/config/pdf.fm and <texmf>/vtex/config/ps.fm "fpl.ali" is to be added to the TYPE1 section of the above-mentioned files: TYPE1 { ... fp9.ali } You need_not_ repeat this step when updating from the previous release. Copy all .enc files from <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips/fp9/ to the directory <texmf>/fonts/enc/dvips/. (Rationale: VTeX/Free does not fully implement the current TDS specifications and does not search recirsively below .../enc/dvips.) NB: This step _must_ be repeated when updating from the previous release! Using the FPL Neu fonts with LaTeX ---------------------------------- See the file fplneu.txt, which resides in the directory <texmf>/doc/fonts/fplneu. Using the Fonts with other applications than TeX ------------------------------------------------ Feel free to use the fonts also with applications other than TeX! The related PFM files are provided for this purpose and shoukld have been installed in the same directory as the PFBs, i.e., fonts/type1/public/fplneu. Bugs and problems ----------------- The fonts require a recent version of dvips; version 5.83 is known to fail. For the time being, the kerning tables cover special characters and typical letter pairs of the following languages only: English, German, and French. Since a lot of effort was put into making decent-looking Polish characters, I have also tried to provide reasonable kerning data for them, but I'm not familiar with this language... Smallcaps and oldstyle digits in the Type1 fonts are accessible via reencoding only. Thus, they are not immediately usable with non-TeX applications. Bad rendering of the top strokes of the letters D and T has been observed on a laser printer HP Laserjet 2200. This occurs apparently due to bad hinting. Credits ------- We express our thanks to Prof. Hermann Zapf for his help and his valuable advice, and to the German TeX user group DANTE e.V., who has granted support to the FPL Neu project.
