These instructions assume you use Postfix.

Greylisting has several disadvantages and is not recommended. Be warned
before enabling, and make familiar with them via Wikipedia before
activatation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greylisting#Disadvantages

Howto

0. Get postgrey RPM package and install it (seems already been done :-)

1. If necessary modify the postgrey whitelist files in /etc/postgrey
   NOTE: the files are located in /etc/postgrey and NOT in /etc/postfix
   as running the postgrey daemon is possible on a different host too.

2. If necessary modify the startup options in /etc/sysconfig/postgrey
   This can be done graphical via YaST -> System -> "/etc/sysconfig Editor"
   in "Network/Mail/Postgrey" too.
   
3. Insert the daemon "postgrey" into System Services:
   - either by command line: "insserv postgrey; /etc/init.d/postgrey start"
   - or graphical via YaST -> System -> "System Services (Runlevel)"

4. Edit postfix configuration to use postgrey.
   - Open an editor of your choice and edit file /etc/postfix/main.cf
   - Search for "smtpd_recipient_restrictions" and append to end of this
     line (separate with comma ','):
     , check_policy_service unix:postgrey/socket
   Note: assuming here that default configuration for POSTGREY_CONN_OPTIONS
   in /etc/sysconfig/postgrey was chosen:
   "--unix=/var/spool/postfix/postgrey/socket"

5. Notify postfix system about configuration change:
   - in a command line tool do as root: "rcpostfix reload"

Mailservers will usually have more complex smtpd restriction parameters,
please read the Postfix documentation if you're not familiar with those.

Since some mailservers don't work well with greylisting, exceptions are
defined in whitelist files.  The default whitelists are in
/etc/postgrey; by default additional *.local files are read if they
exist in that directory.  If you specify any whitelist files on the
commandline, the default locations are *not* used at all.  Read the
postgrey manpage for more information.

The postgrey package does not depend on postfix, as you can run it on a
dedicated machine separate from your mailserver.
