to quote wikipedia:
Software Configuration Management (SCM) is part of configuration management (CM). Roger Pressman (in his book) Software Engineering: A Practitioner's Approach, says that software configuration management (SCM) is a "set of activities designed to control change by identifying the work products that are likely to change, establishing relationships among them, defining mechanisms for managing different versions of these work products, controlling the changes imposed, and auditing and reporting on the changes made." In other words, SCM is a methodology to control and manage a software development project.

SCM concerns itself with answering the question: somebody did something, how can one reproduce it? Often the problem involves not reproducing "it" identically, but with controlled, incremental changes. Answering the question will thus become a matter of comparing different results and of analysing their differences. Traditional CM typically focused on controlled creation of relatively simple products. Nowadays, implementers of SCM face the challenge of dealing with relatively minor increments under their own control, in the context of the complex system being developed.

A fullscreen, distraction-free writing program. You can customize your
environment by changing the font, colors, and background image to add
ambiance as you type. FocusWriter features an on-the-fly updating word
count, optional auto-save, optional daily goals, and an interface that
hides away to allow you to focus more clearly; additionally, when you open
the program your current work-in-progress will automatically load and
position you at the end of your document, so that you can immediately jump
back in.

NovProg allows you to create a graph of your progress in writing a
NaNoWriMo style novel. You enter your wordcount and it updates a graph
showing you how much progress you have made. It also shows you how far you
are through your daily goal, and your total goal. Mousing over a bar in the
graph will show a tooltip with that day's wordcount.

GNU Dico is a flexible modular implementation of DICT server (RFC 2229). In
contrast to another implementations, it does not depend on particular
database format. GNU Dico handles database accesses using loadable modules.

dt is a generic data test program used to verify proper operation of
peripherals, file systems, device drivers, or any data stream supported
by the operating system. In its simplest mode of operation, dt writes
and then verifys its default data pattern, then displays performance
statisics and other test parameters before exiting. Since verification
of data is performed, dt can be thought of as a generic diagnostic tool.

FATsort sorts directory structures of FAT filesystems. Many MP3 hardware
players don't sort files automatically but play them in the order they were
transmitted to the device. FATSort can help here.

This program determines the skew angle for text, and works with black/white
images in TIFF or PBM format. To achieve this, it uses an original
algorithm based on a fast implementation of the Radon transform. This
program is part of the Page Layout Detection Tools project, which aims to
automate the layout detection in scanned page images.

DiskScan is a Unix/Linux tool to scan a block device and check
if there are unreadable sectors, in addition it uses read
latency times as an assessment for a near failure as sectors
that are problematic to read usually entail many retries. This
can be used to assess the state of the disk and maybe decide
on a replacement in advance to its imminent failure. The disk
self test may or may not pick up on such clues depending on
the disk vendor decision making logic.

The FirmWare Test Suite (fwts) is a tool to do automatic testing of a PC's
firmware. There can be a lot of subtle or vexing Linux Kernel/firmware issues
caused when firmware is buggy, so it's useful to have a tool that can
automatically check for common BIOS and ACPI errors. Where possible the tool
will give some form of advice on how to fix issues or workaround firmware
issues.
