New grep library specifically designed for computer forensics use. Bulk_extractor 1.4.0 (released Sept 9,2013) optionally supports it if available. There are Project Gutenburg books included in the source that are used for automated testing. I believe they are opensource, but I don't see them listed at SPDX.
