git-subrepo
This git command "clones" an external git repo into a subdirectory of your repo. Later on, upstream changes can be pulled in, and local changes can be pushed back. Simple.

git-subrepo is a nice and well tested tool for adding contents from other repositories to your git repositories. It has been added already to several distributions and will soon be added to Debian and Ubuntu: https://repology.org/project/git-subrepo/versions
