As I know how bash now works due to the changes for the lastpipe shell option caused by an idea from mine https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-bash/2010-06/msg00097.html. Now the support of lastpipe seems to be more robust

Avoid to become command last in a pipe/subshell ... that is what ;: does. Without overriding the environment.

I know what your patch does, but why not take the one I submitted upstream?

I'd like to avoid env(1) as it manipulates the enviroment
