- Update to released v5.0.1

I am not sure whether I know what I am doing but I was asked to do it and so I did. I think the mechanism of alternatives is to provide alternative implementations, not to allow parallel versions. However, I understand that the situation where the last released version is was obsolete was intolerable. I removed the patches because they failed and I did not know whether they are still relevant. Please advise!
