Checked the RPMs built in the adi staging and the /usr/bin/python dep is gone and moved to python3. So in some way that seems to actually work.
Right. The %else was missing. I remember adding it but it probably got deleted during erratic editing as I need to do these things at odd hours which leads to odd errors as you've just seen. I will submit a new version. I would not mind too much dropping this package from Factory altogether. We no longer ship it with SLE. We have Spack now which you can use to build it in the shape it is needed.
I don't think anything speaks against dropping this (I could not find any dependency on it)
Weird thing noted: this built in staging, but now in openSUSE:Factory, the gnu*hpc flavors fail to build
(if we don't want to eliminate it all, maybe just keeping serial and openmpi4 flavors?)
