Did you investigate how complicated it would be to go the other way around? I.e., to patch the package so it works with pytest and eliminate nose2 (I really really long for eliminating nose2 from the distribution)?

yes , not possible port to newer pytest, it based on feature deprecated from version 3.0 and removed in 4.0,

for nose2 -> simply remove nose2 from test and build requires
