Since this seems to be a dependency generator, just use $RPM_ARCH instead of $HOSTTYPE. HOSTTYPE is a bashism, it depends on the particular way bash was built (autoconf triplet), and, adding insult to injury, SUSE's /etc/profile can set the value to non-autoconf triplets, such as uname machine types.

RPM_ARCH is %_build_arch. (Not as good as %_target_cpu, but at least it's a value by and for rpm builds.) grep -r _build_arch /usr/lib/rpm/platform for possible values.

I'm in favor of that - but please in a 2nd step; currently, the fix is quite important to get ppc moving at all again (least change possible - will try your SR in G:Nfactory for the next few days)
