Involved Projects and Packages

This project contains various time archiving tools/utilities. While building is enabled for other distributions then Tumbleweed/Factory, primary purpose of this project is development, not backporting for older releases. Do not add this project repositories to your systems unless you know what you are doing and are willing to fix issues you encounter.

This is the Base:System devel project. Its main purpose is to serve as development project for packages around the topic of the system base in the openSUSE:Factory distribution. If you want to participate you can contact us individually or use our mailinglist opensuse-factory@opensuse.org. Please report bugs to the respective bugowners as set.

Warning: This is not a backports project! Installing the packages here on an old distribution may cause severe breakage!

DO NOT ENABLE BUILDING FOR OLD DISTROS!

This package installs several important configuration files. Central
scripts like SuSEconfig are also in this package.
Please note the sources live in git, adding patches here just creates extra work.

The blogd daemon determines the real underlying character device of /dev/console. Blogd spawns a pty/tty pair to reconnect the current /dev/console with the slave of the pty/tty pair. During writing information from this slave to the real character device a ring buffer is used to hold the information for writing it to an existing logging file.

The blog is part of https://github.com/bitstreamout/showconsole

This library provides GObject bindings for libudev. It was originally part of udev-extras, then udev, then systemd. It's now a project on its own.

libpipeline is a C library for setting up and running pipelines of processes, without needing to involve shell command-line parsing which is often error-prone and insecure. This alleviates programmers of the need to laboriously construct pipelines using lower-level primitives such as fork(2) and execve(2)

As soon as a text application needs to directly control its output to
the screen (if it wants to place the cursor at location (x,y) then
write text), ncurses is used. The panel and the forms libraries are
included in this package. These new libraries support color, special
characters, and panels.

The syslogd daemon is the general system logging daemon, which is
responsible for handling requests for syslog services.
This version of syslogd is similar to the standard Berkeley product,
but with a number of compatible extensions.

The klogd daemon 'listens' to kernel log messages, prioritizes them,
and routes them to either output files or to syslog daemon.
This version of klogd will optionally translate kernel addresses to
their symbolic equivalents if provided with a system map.

systemd is a system and session manager for Linux, compatible with SysV and LSB init scripts. systemd provides aggressive parallelization capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, keeps track of processes using Linux cgroups, supports snapshotting and restoring of the system state, maintains mount and automount points and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic. It can work as a drop-in replacement for sysvinit.

System V style init programs by Miquel van Smoorenburg that control the booting and shutdown of your system. These support a number of system runlevels, each one associated with a specific set of utilities. For example, the normal system runlevel is 3, which starts a getty on virtual consoles tty1-tty6. Runlevel 5 starts xdm. Runlevel 0 shutsdown the system. See the individual man pages for inittab, initscript, halt, init, powerd, reboot, runlevel, shutdown, and telinit for more information.
