It's not (yet) clear if zypper is 'broken' or if t-u is just doing something that unintentionally worked (despite being wrong)
zypper --help has:
--xmlout, -x Switch to XML output.
--xml seems not to exist at all (and abbreviations is what this zypper version indeed is blocking)

Need fixes for transactional-updates (and possibly more) t-u uses --xml as shorthand for --xmlout
